Why are Nigerians always so happy and excited to see corpers?
I can’t be the only one asking this question. Is it the uniform? Or perhaps the glorified notion of serving one’s country?
Don’t answer that yet. Let me tell you my experience.
So, let’s go back in time to December 18th; the three weeks orientation camp is finally over, and I’m on my way back to Lagos; from Ogun state.
Immediately I came down from the bus, everybody’s eyes were on my friends and I.
And no, I am not exaggerating.
From the numerous okada riders parked at the side of the road; to the market sellers; to the other many Nigerians rushing somewhere.
All eyes were on us.
And as if a spell was suddenly broken, people began to shout ‘corpers wee, corpers wee’.
It was hilarious.
But then, they keep smiling at you – so much that it becomes infectious – and waiting for some kind of energetic response.
The other day, on my way back from my Local Government, I had to make a pretend phone call all the way from my bus stop to my house; to avoid anybody talking to me, and shouting corpers wee at me.
That corpers wee ehn, they like it too much.
Especially in this Lagos.
I was in Ikeja yesterday, and I had to ask directions from this FRSC man; and he kept smiling; and;
Wait for it..
This man sang two lines of the NYSC anthem to me! Me that was rushing to submit documents and do clearance.
The story doesn’t end here. We know you have experiences like this; tell us in the comments.
